Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland-Imagn Image Jesper Bratt scored the final score in a penalty shootout to give the New Jersey Devils a 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday in Newark, New Jersey.
The Devils are on a three-game winning streak and erased three of Toronto’s leads before winning in a shootout. New Jersey is 4-0 in shootouts and 11-2 in regulation this season.
Arseny Gritsyuk had a goal and an assist for the Devils and Nico Hischier had two assists. Timo Meier and Connor Brown scored the other goals for New Jersey.
Jacob Markstrom stopped 24 of 27 shots in regulation and overtime, and both shots in the penalty shootout. Markstrom’s biggest stop was a brilliant pad save from Nick Robertson in the final minute of regulation.
Matias Marchelli, William Nylander and Matthew Nice scored for the Maple Leafs, who are on a five-game winless streak (0-3-2).
The Devils beat the Leafs 47-27 and Anthony Stolarz did his best to keep Toronto in the game. Stolarz saved 44 of 47 shots, the fourth-highest save total in nine NHL seasons.
Maccelli opened the scoring at 5:26 of the first period when the forward buried a wrist shot from the slot. The Devils responded with 7:55 to play as Meier converted a one-timer from the circle.
At 3:20 in the final second quarter of the Toronto power play, Easton Cowan’s mid-range shot hit Nylander and went into the net. New Jersey responded with another quick equalizer when Gritsyuk converted the equalizer 6:00 into the second frame.
At 13:50 of the third period, Knies knocked a loose puck out of the air and into the net to put the Leafs ahead once again.
The Devils outscored the Leafs 14-5 in the third period. The late pressure paid off less than four minutes later when Brown completed a nice passing play for the Devils’ third tying goal.
Bobby McMann, Scott Laughton and Oliver Ekman-Larsson were all left out of Toronto’s lineup. All three players were rumored to be moved before Friday’s NHL trade deadline.
