Denmark-based Danske Commodities has signed a ten-year contract to optimize a 400 megawatt-hour (MWh) Vendel battery energy storage system (BESS) in the UK.
Located near Glasgow, Scotland, the project is being developed by Riviera Energy with support from Carlyle, an international investment company.
The Danish energy trading company will use its automated systems to manage trading and optimization services for the 200MW/400MWh-capacity asset, its largest battery storage effort to date.
Using its automated algorithmic systems, Dansk Commodities aims to maximize returns from the wholesale and ancillary services markets.
Danske Commodities CEO Jakob Sørensen said: “We are proud to announce Danske Commodities’ optimization agreement for Windyhill BESS. With more than 15 years of experience in the UK electricity markets, we will apply our commercial expertise to optimize battery storage assets and help provide much-needed flexibility for sustainable power generation.
“The UK is a core market for us, and we look forward to expanding our portfolio of flexible assets.”
The agreement with Windhill follows a similar optimization contract secured by Danske Commodities last year for the 200MWh Kvosted battery storage asset in the Nordics.
The move is in line with the company’s strategy to expand its asset portfolio and strengthen its position in energy trading and asset management.
Sorensen added: “Building on Dansk Commodities’ experience from short-term power trading, we will use our fully automated algorithmic configuration to maximize returns for our partners in the wholesale and ancillary services markets.
“We expect increased demand from customers who need help managing flexible services. This includes batteries and other assets that can be turned on, charged or turned off, depending on which returns the highest.”
Currently, Danski Commodities manages a portfolio of 16GW of renewable and flexible assets across Europe.
