Kyler Murray is heading toward a crossroads in his career next week when the former No. 1 NFL draft pick is expected to be released by the Arizona Cardinals.

Several teams with a desperate need for the position reportedly have offers lined up for Murray, from the New York Jets to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings.

A 28-year-old should definitely have options.

But will baseball come back to the table for Murray, a two-sport standout out of Oklahoma who was drafted ninth overall by the A’s in the 2018 MLB Draft?

The A’s signed Murray before he was selected first overall by the Cardinals in 2019, ending his baseball career. When that candle flickers, A’s general manager David Foss said the franchise will entertain conversations.

“Kyler is an elite NFL quarterback and I am confident he has many opportunities to continue his football career,” Forst told MLB.com. “But he and his baseball representatives know that we are always open to exploring a return to baseball with the A’s if the time comes.”

Even if Murray isn’t ready to completely close the door on professional football, he could consider returning to training to attempt feats of the sport last performed by Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders.

The A’s still retain contractual rights, meaning Murray is not free to play for MLB and NFL teams in the same city or region (such as the Jets and Yankees or the Dolphins and Marlins) without a trade.

Murray was an outfielder for the Sooners and started 50 games in 2018, batting .296 with 10 home runs, 13 doubles, 47 RBI, 46 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.
