Former Green Bay Packers special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia has joined Clemson in the same role, the university announced Wednesday.

Bisaccia will replace Will Gilchrist, currently an assistant coach at Samford.

But Bisaccia is no stranger to the Tigers. He previously served as a running back and special teams player for the team from 1994-98.

“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to work with the young men in the Clemson football program and be part of a tremendous staff,” Bisaccia said in a statement. “After I decided to move in a new direction, Coach (Dabo) Swinney approached me with an opportunity to return to a place that had special meaning to me and my family.”

Bisaccia, 65, joined Green Bay as special teams coordinator in February 2022 and added the title of assistant coach in March 2023.

In addition to the Packers, Bisaccia served as a special teams coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002-10), then-San Diego Chargers (2011-12), Dallas Cowboys (2013-17) and Las Vegas Raiders (2018-21). He served as Las Vegas’ interim head coach in 2021 following Jon Gruden’s resignation.

“I’ve known him for a number of years and we’ve actually had several conversations about the possibility of him joining our staff,” Swinney said. “It was never going to work out, either from a timing standpoint or because of the way the rules were set up in college. But the rules changed to allow everyone to coach on the field, and with his career, he wanted to end up here at Clemson. I’m very glad it worked out for us, too, because he’s as good a special teams coach as he’s been in the NFL for a long time.”
