(by Oil & Gas 360) – China continues to deepen energy ties with both Iran and Latin America, strengthening supply chains while expanding its economic influence in key reservoir regions.
In Iran, Beijing’s involvement centers largely on oil, gas and infrastructure. China is one of the largest buyers of Iran’s crude oil, accounting for over 80 percent of Iran’s oil exports and over 13 percent of China’s crude imports.
Chinese state-owned companies have pursued high-profile projects, including development work in the North Azdegan oil field and participation in major gas projects such as South Pars.
The two countries have deepened their economic ties through a 25-year cooperation agreement signed in 2021, designed to deepen trade and investment ties in the fields of energy, infrastructure and transportation.
Even Chinese investment in Iran remains cautious due to US sanctions and geopolitical risks.
China’s footprint in Latin America has expanded through loans, infrastructure projects and energy investments. Since 2005, China’s state-owned banks have provided nearly $120 billion in financial aid to countries in the region, supporting projects ranging from power generation and mining to oil development and transportation networks.
Chinese energy companies have invested in oil fields in Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador and Argentina, often partnering with state-owned producers to secure long-term access to crude and other natural resources.
In parallel, China has financed major infrastructure projects, including ports, power grids and renewable energy facilities, which help connect local resources to global markets.
Together, these investments form part of Beijing’s broader strategy: diversifying energy supplies, deepening trade ties, and expanding influence in regions where Western investment has sometimes been limited by political or financial risk.
For global energy markets, China’s growing presence in both Iran and Latin America reflects a changing landscape in which energy supply chains, infrastructure financing and geopolitical alliances are increasingly intertwined.
