Coach Kelvin Sampson’s club is scheduled to play its home finale Wednesday night against Baylor in the second meeting of the season between the Texas programs.
The Cougars (24-5, 12-4) broke a three-game losing streak by beating Colorado by as many as 40 points on Saturday, thanks to 26 points from Milos Uzan and all-around production from Kingston Flemings.
Uzan shot the ball well, going 9 of 13 from the floor, including 5 of 7 from beyond the arc.
Flemings had 11 points, eight assists and six rebounds as the Cougars made 34 of 57 shots (59.6%) from the floor and held Colorado to 23 of 50 (46.0%) shooting.
Sampson said after the game that he had a man-to-man meeting with Uzan, who is second on the squad with averages of 11.5 points and 4.1 assists per game.
“I thought Milos was starting to drift a little bit,” Sampson said. “I had to bring him back to center. I had to remind him how great he was and how special he was.”
The Flemings boast team-high averages in points (16.4), assists (5.2) and steals (1.6), with Emmanuel Sharp averaging 15.8 points. Chris Cenac Jr. averaged 9.6 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds.
With Arizona clinching the regular season Big 12 title on Monday, the Cougars will turn their attention to securing second place in the conference. They host No. 5 TCU on Tuesday before playing the season finale at BYU on Saturday. Shares the same 12-4 conference record as 10 Texas Tech.
Joe Lunardi’s latest ESPN Bracketology projections have the Cougars as a No. 3 seed in the South.
Baylor (15-14, 5-11), coming off its best win over a surging UCF team on Saturday in Orlando, Fla., sits near the bottom of the Big 12 standings. The Bears are tied with Oklahoma State with five wins, three ahead of last-place Kansas State and Utah.
Cameron Carr, who averaged 19.2 points on the season, had 26 points against the Knights and Obi Agbim sealed the game with a free throw with 1.3 seconds left in the 87-86 win.
Coach Scott Drew’s group won two of three games, but two four-game losing streaks sent the Bears down to the basement of the Big 12.
Drew likes the play of guard Isaac Williams, who averages 10.6 points per game.
“(He’s) very effective at getting to the paint. I think his ability to get to the paint and spray around and get shots to other guys has really improved,” Drew said.
Sharp contributed 17 points as Houston scored in double figures during Houston’s 77-55 win over Baylor on Jan. 10.
