Brendan Rogers He’s in big-league camp with the Red Sox this spring, hoping to land a spot in Boston’s infield alongside his former Rockies teammate. Trevor Story. A right shoulder injury suffered at the end of February put those hopes on hold and the latest update from skipper Alex Cora may have dashed those hopes entirely. Via Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, Cora said Tuesday that Rodgers will “most likely” need shoulder surgery. Rodgers has already had a CT scan and MRI of his shoulder, and Cora previously revealed the results of those tests “didn’t look good.” Rodgers gets another opinion from renowned surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache to confirm his prospects.
The injury occurred early in camp. Rodgers, playing second base, dove to left to hit the bat of Twins shortstop Brooks Lee (video link via MLB.com). He snow-coned the liner for a moment, but the ball bounced out of his glove when it hit the ground hard. Rodgers was in obvious and immediate pain and left the scene, accompanied by members of the Red Sox training staff.
Rodgers, 29, has already had surgery on each shoulder. He suffered a torn labrum during his rookie season in 2019 and underwent surgery in July of that year. In 2023, he suffered an injury during spring training, originally called a left shoulder dislocation. Additional testing revealed a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder requiring surgery, but Rodgers was able to return to the field for the final months of that season.
Formerly the third overall pick in the draft and a consensus top prospect, Rodgers’ career hasn’t gone as expected. He’s a lifetime .261/.313/.401 hitter and has only played in 100 games in a season three times. He has never appeared in more than 137 games or had more than 581 at-bats, and has only had two big league seasons with more than 500 plate appearances. Rogers, who spent the 2019-24 seasons in Denver, signed a minor league contract with Houston last winter and was named to the roster. However, he hit just .191/.266/.278 (55 wRC+) in 128 plate appearances as an Astro.
Boston’s infield composition is relatively unstable. The Sox were traded. Rafael Devers I went to the Giants last June and watched the game. Alex Bregman He signed with the Cubs as a free agent. They traded with the Cardinals Wilson Contreras And the Brewers Caleb Durbin This winter. Contreras will slot in at first base, while Durbin will fill in at second or third base along with the aforementioned Story.
top prospect Marcelo Mayer The Red Sox are also the favorites to keep the spot vacated by Durbin. Andru Monasterio (acquired with Durbin); Aysia Kiner-Falepa (signed as a free agent), blue (claim for exemption) and hold Nick Sogard and nate eaton On the 40-man roster. Former top prospect Christian Campbellwho signed an eight-year extension contract early last year, is mainly evaluated as a forward-moving outfielder.
