Baseball Hall of Famer makes unprecedented decision regarding Andre Dawson

The Montreal Expos disappeared from Major League Baseball when the franchise moved to Washington, D.C., for the 2005 Sayson season.

Now, a small but important remnant of the Expos’ storied past is being erased from the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Cooperstown, N.Y., institution has approved Hall of Famer Andre Dawson’s request to change his plaque. Dawson’s plaque, originally depicted with the Expos logo from his inauguration in 2010, will be remade to remove the logo at his request.

“I’m happy that we can put this all behind us,” he told MLB.com on March 11 from the Chicago Cubs’ spring training camp.

Dawson was one of Montreal’s first stars. In 11 seasons with the Expos, the outfielder won six Gold Glove Awards and the 1977 National League Rookie of the Year Award.

Dawson joined the Cubs in 1987 and won the NL MVP award that same year. He was selected to five All-Star teams over the next six seasons in Chicago.

Despite playing more games in Montreal and still ranking third in Expos/Nationals history in home runs (225) and stolen bases (253), Dawson wanted a Cubs logo on his plaque in Cooperstown.

The Hall of Fame has the final say on which team’s logo appears on a player’s plaque. Since 2014, players who have made a major impact for multiple franchises have been able to select a gap cap.

Against his wishes, Dawson will be given an empty hat when the plaque is recreated.

“The Hall of Fame Board of Directors unanimously decided to provide a logo-free option for Andre Dawson’s Hall of Fame plaque,” Jane Forbes Clark, chair of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum Board of Directors, said in a statement. “This decision gives Andre the choice he would have had if he had been elected in 2010, just four years before the alternative was officially implemented.”

Hall had never before recreated a plaque for the purpose of changing the logo displayed on a player’s cap.

Now the Expos are once again on the path to failure.
