Attacks on Iran violate UN charter, independent probe says – The National

An independent United Nations inquiry into rights abuses in Iran on Wednesday condemned Israel and the United States’ attacks on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory attacks across the region, saying they violated the UN Charter.

The Charter of the United Nations prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

“These attacks, which followed Iran’s retaliatory strikes across the region, are contrary to the UN Charter,” the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission in Iran said in a statement.

It expressed deep shock over the strike on the Shazareh Tayebeh Girls’ School in Minab, southern Iran, on Saturday, the first day of the US and Israeli strikes.

A UN fact-finding investigation says Iran’s population is now caught between a large-scale military operation that could last for weeks and a government in Tehran with a long record of human rights abuses.

Tens of thousands of people were arrested and faced torture and the death penalty after a brutal crackdown on protests that began on December 28, 2025, in response to the country’s economic crisis, a UN investigation said.

It said protesters currently held in prisons could be at risk from any US-Israel attacks. A British couple jailed in Iran described explosions that rocked Evin prison on Tuesday and damaged their wing as the conflict intensified.

The statement said the killing of dozens of Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US-Israeli airstrikes was not an acceptable means of delivering justice under international law.
