Standing in Russia’s way is another semifinal, after beating No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia, Talon Griggspur of the Netherlands, 7-5, 7-6(6).
Medvedev has a 22-19 record in ATP Tour finals, including a victory over Rublev in the 2023 Dubai title. He has never won more than one event in any event, a statistic he can erase on Saturday.
Medvedev dominated Auger-Aliassime with his serve, winning 88% of his first serves and never allowing the Canadian to reach a break point.
Griekspoor has a 3-2 record in career finals, having split a pair last year. He won the first set by scoring the only break of the match, then saved two set points against Rublev in the second set tiebreaker to win the final four points of the match.
BCI Seguros Chile Open
Two Argentines achieved consecutive wins in the quarterfinals held in Santiago, Chile.
Top seed Francisco Cerundolo defeated American Emilio Nava 6-1, 6-1 in 66 minutes, while third-seeded Sebastián Báez defeated eighth-seeded Alejandro Tabilo, the last Chilean player in the field, 7-6(2), 6-1.
Cerundolo’s semifinal opponent will be Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann, who edged out lucky loser Vilius Gaubas of Lithuania 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Baez will face second-seeded Luciano Darderi, who beat Andrea Pellegrino 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the Italian quarterfinals.
Avierto Mexicano Telcel
Fifth-seeded Flavio Cobolli will make his third ATP Tour appearance in the past year for Saturday’s championship in Acapulco, Mexico.
The Italian defeated Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4 in the semifinals. Cobolli had a 36-26 advantage in winners, including a 13-7 advantage in aces, and had one fewer unforced error than Kecmanovic (37-36).
Cobolli’s final round opponent will be the winner of late Friday’s semifinal, an all-American matchup featuring eighth seeds Frances Tiafoe and Brandon Nakashima.
