The U.S. women’s national team won its eighth SheBelieves Cup title with Alyssa Thompson’s 82nd-minute goal against Colombia on Saturday in Harrison, New Jersey.

Thompson received a pass from Jaedyn Shaw at the top of the box. With no one closing, she calmly fired a shot into the top left corner, grazing the bottom of the crossbar on its way to the back of the net to seal her 11th of the tournament.

Thompson has scored four goals in 29 career games.

The United States entered the game with six points, while Canada and Colombia were tied for second place with three points. Canada was eliminated from title contention with a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Argentina on Saturday morning after holding them two scoreless.

Colombia (-2) knew they had to win by three goals as the United States (+5) had a goal difference tiebreaker.

But Colombia couldn’t find a way against a defense that was set to record eight straight shutouts.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce had one save for the United States, whose five-year winning streak was ended by Japan last season. France won in 2017, and England won in 2019.

The United States also failed to find a breakthrough, making only one shot in the first 45 minutes and two more in the second half, but Tomspon scored an important shot.

Emily Sonnett, the only player to have competed in all 11 SheBelieves Cup tournaments, won her eighth title, tying a record she shares with retired goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

The USWNT opened the tournament with a 2–0 win over Argentina in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 1 with goals by Lindsey Hibbs and Shaw, and four days later defeated Canada 1–0 in Columbus, Ohio, thanks to a goal by Ally Sentnor.

Colombia went 0-13-2 and scored two goals to earn a win over the consistently stingy Americans under coach Emma Hayes. They have kept 25 clean sheets in her 35 games.
