The Spurs will look to continue their success as they enter the new month Sunday afternoon when they take on the host New York Knicks in a nationally televised matchup.
The Knicks were hot, too. Except for his poor performance against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. They rebounded from that setback to earn their 13th win in 17 games with a 127-98 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.
San Antonio is on a 13-game winning streak from December 26, 2015, to January 22, 2016.
The Spurs improved to 3-0 in five games on the road after Thursday’s 126-110 win over the Brooklyn Nets.
“We’re doing the right things,” Brooklyn native Julian Champagne said after scoring 26 points in a win over the Nets. “As a team, we put our energy in the right places. No egos, no personal goals. Just good basketball.”
Stephon Castle scored 13 of his 18 points in the first quarter, while De’Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell each had 14 points to offset another subpar performance from Victor Wembanyama, who finished with 12 points.
“Does this mean it was perfect? Not at all,” Wembanyama said after the team had its third perfect month in franchise history. “But looking back, it was never going to be perfect, so (this step) was pretty satisfying.”
Champagne scored a career-high 36 points and hit a franchise-record 11 3-pointers in San Antonio’s 134-132 win over New York on New Year’s Eve.
Wembayama had 31 points and 13 rebounds in 24 minutes before suffering a leg injury.
Jalen Brunson scored 29 points in that game for the Knicks and added 27 against the Bucks on Friday.
“We were physical offensively because we set screens the right way and played fast,” New York coach Mike Brown said. “So it takes all of us to do that, and if we do that and have one of those guys (like Brunson), he can break free. It was good to see tonight.”
OG Anunoby scored 24 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Knicks, who shot 21 of 42 3-pointers.
“This is how we’ve played offensively all year,” Brown said. “So for us to be able to space the ball correctly, touch the paint, play with both feet and make quick decisions with the basketball was a huge deal.
“We got a lot of mileage out of playing the game the right way, so I applaud our guys for playing the way they did on both sides of the ball tonight.”
The Knicks know their schedule is only going to get more difficult as March begins. They are scheduled to visit Toronto on Tuesday, host Oklahoma City on Thursday before beginning a five-game road trip against the Denver Nuggets on Friday and the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.
