Mandatory Credit: Craig Strobeck-Imagn Image Kwame Evans Jr. hit 5 of 6 free throws with 2.5 seconds to play to lead Oregon to an 85-79 victory over Washington in the regular-season finale of the two longtime rivals on Saturday night in Eugene, Oregon.
Washington coach Danny Sprinkle was issued two technical fouls after the Ducks took a one-point lead and took the ball out of the hands of Huskies forward Hannes Steinbach and attempted a steal. Evans collected the loose ball before it went out of bounds and was fouled.
Evans made three of four technical foul free throws and then was fouled and made two to seal the game for the Ducks (12-19, 5-15 Big Ten). Evans also gave Oregon an 80-79 lead with a 3-pointer and a free throw after committing a foul with 11 seconds left in the game.
Evans scored nine of his team-leading 20 points in the final 11 seconds of the game. Takai Simpkins added 18 points and Nate Bittle had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists in his final game at home in an Oregon uniform after five seasons with the program.
Oregon led by as many as 21 points in the first half and took control early in the second half before Washington (15-16, 7-13) took a 75-74 lead with 2:11 to play.
Momentum stayed with the Huskies after a pair of free throws by Steinbach with 24 seconds left gave the Huskies a 79-76 lead. Washington’s standout freshman Steinbach overcame first-half foul trouble to score 22 of his 26 points in the second half and 12 of his 13 rebounds in the 20 minutes of the second half.
Oregon got off to a hot start by hitting seven consecutive 3-pointers, giving the Ducks a 31-10 lead with 9 minutes left in the first half. The Huskies led 44-30 at halftime.
With 10 minutes left in the game, the Ducks were ahead by 18 points, but the Huskies worked hard on defense and consistently made shots, ultimately taking the lead.
Both teams enter the Big Ten Tournament next week, with Oregon playing as a bottom-four seed on Tuesday.
