Spring training recap: Sandy Alcantara trade as Marlins beat Astros

Former National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara struck out four and retired all nine batters to help the Miami Marlins to a 2-0 win over the Houston Astros in Jupiter, Florida, on Thursday.

Alcantara threw 31 of his 43 pitches for strikes early in a contest in which five Miami pitchers combined for one hit, no runs and 13 strikeouts. Alcantara was the NL’s best pitcher in 2022 until a serious arm injury derailed his most recent season.

Robby Snelling replaced Alcantara and struck out six over three innings. He gave up Houston’s lone hit, Jack Cole’s hit, in the top of the fourth inning.

Xavier Edwards had an RBI single in the third and Esteury Ruiz had a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Twins 15, Yankees 0 (7)

Luke Kitschall went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and James Outman hit a two-run shot to end New York’s eight-game winning streak in a game called for rain in the top of the seventh inning by visiting Minnesota State in Tampa, Florida.

Noah Cardenas scored three runs, Gabriel Gonzalez had two hits and the Twins had 16 hits. The Yankees had just two hits in 18 at-bats, including Jason Dominguez’s one hit in the first inning and Ryan McMahon’s hit in the fifth inning.

Cardinals 3, Pirates 2

Jimmy Crooks singled off Joshua Baez to tie the game with two outs in the eighth inning as St. Louis recorded a win over Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Florida.

Nolan Gorman hit a two-run home run for the Cardinals, who had six hits. Alika Williams hit a 2-pointer for the Pirates.

Nationals 7, Mets 4

Trey Lipscomb hit a game-tying, two-run double during a four-run sixth inning to help host Washington topple New York in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Matt Mervis had a run-scoring single and Seaver King had an RBI double in the bottom of the inning for the Nationals. For the Mets, Brett Baty hit a two-run home run and free agent Bo Bichette went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Braves 9, Blue Jays 5

Tristen English hit a three-run double and Chris Sale gave up one run over three innings as Atlanta bested its visit to Toronto in Venice, Florida.

Dominic Smith hit a two-run home run and Drake Baldwin added a two-run hit for the Braves. Addison Barger and Cutter Coffey each had a two-run double for the Blue Jays.

Orioles 4, Rays 3

Will Robertson hit a two-run home run and Jose Barrero hit a solo shot to lead Baltimore’s trip past Tampa Bay in Port Charlotte, Florida.

In the 6th inning, Robertson’s performance gave the Orioles a 4-0 lead. Jose Perez, Gregory Barrios and Nicandro Aybar had run-scoring singles for the Rays.

Phillies 6, Red Sox 2

Jesus Luzardo struck out five and gave up two hits over three innings to help Philadelphia beat visiting Boston in Clearwater.

Dylan Moore hit a three-run single in the third and Christian Cairo added a solo shot in the seventh. Braiden Ward went 2-for-2 and stole two bases for the Red Sox, raising his spring average to .450 with 10 stolen bases.
