Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images The PWHL game at Madison Square Garden on April 4 is expected to break the U.S. attendance record for a professional women’s hockey game.
The game between the New York Sirens and Seattle Torrent is sold out, and the historic stadium can seat 18,006 fans.
A PWHL spokesperson told ESPN that the sellout was sparked “by riding the wave of the Winter Olympics,” and that interest and ticket sales have surged significantly since Team USA’s overtime win over Canada to win the gold medal in Milan last month.
“New York has set the standard for excellence, and the response at Madison Square Garden on April 4 confirms that this market is ready to embrace women’s hockey at the highest level,” Sirens general manager Pascal Daoust said in a statement. “Selling out the world’s most famous stadium is a defining moment for the New York Sirens and a powerful statement about the growth of our league, the passion of our fans and our commitment to building something lasting and great together.”
The PWHL also confirmed on Thursday that its April 11 game at TD Garden in Boston featuring the Boston Fleet and Montreal Victoire is sold out. The facility has a capacity of 17,800.
The ink was barely dry on the current U.S. attendance record of 17,335 for the contest between the Torrent and Toronto Sceptres on February 27th at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.
“Playing in front of sold-out houses at Madison Square Garden and TD Garden is a historic moment for our players and our sport,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHL Vice President of Hockey Operations. “As they have shown time and time again, our players emerge when the spotlight is brightest, giving audiences in both New York and Boston a chance to see their world-class talent in full view.”
The Sirens typically play their home games on the other side of the Hudson River at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, home of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.
The PWHL launches with six teams in 2023-24. Seattle and the Vancouver Goldeneyes have now joined the league for their third seasons.
