Fanuza Kadirova scored twice, including a power-play winner with 1:46 left, as the Ottawa Charge beat the Seattle Torrent 4-3 in the Professional Women’s Hockey League on Wednesday night.
Alexa Vasko and Emily Clark also scored for Ottawa (5-5-1-7), while Katerina Mrazova and Catherine Riley each provided two assists. Gwyneth Phillips made 33 saves.
Jesse Eldridge responded with two goals, and Alex Carpenter scored on a penalty kick for Seattle (4-1-2-9). Carpenter added an assist, Julia Gosling pitched in with two helpers, and Hannah Murphy stopped 23 shots.
Before Kadirova’s win, Carpenter beat the Philips glove team to tie the game midway through the third after being pulled by Reilly on the break.
After a lengthy pre-game ceremony that included carpeting and chairs near the visitors’ net, the game was delayed an hour due to ice issues. The players stood for nearly 30 minutes while repairs were made and then returned to the locker room.
When the puck dropped, the Charge were up 2-0 with 57.3 seconds left in the first period when Mrazova made a nice cross-ice pass to Kadyrova, who tipped the puck past Murphy to the short side.
Torrent took the lead on a power play goal midway through the second period when Eldridge was left alone next to the net.
Ottawa regained a two-goal lead just 42 seconds later. Reilly won a 2-on-1 match against Clark, who beat Murphy closely.
But a power play by Eldridge and Torrent struck again with five minutes left in the second to make it 3-2.
Charge: Second period breakdowns continue to plague the Charge.
Torrent: Seattle rebounded from a tough first period to a solid second period to beat the Charge 17-7.
Clark has 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) with a second-period goal for his PWHL career.
Carpenter scored the first penalty kick goal in league history.
