Peña, 28, was an All-Star for the Astros in 2025, hitting .304/.363/.477 in 125 games. His .840 OPS (132 OPS+) was by far the best of his four-year MLB career.
According to Chandler Loma of The AthleticThe Astros hope to have an update on Peña on Thursday. Astros GM Dana Brown described Peña’s removal as a “precautionary measure.”
The injury is a bigger setback for the Dominican Republic than it is for the Astros, who have been sidelined for several weeks. The Dominicans were expecting Peña to play a key role in the 12-day international tournament.
Fortunately, the Dominicans are particularly strong on the left side of the infield. Manny Machado, Geraldo Perdomo and Junior Caminoro are All-Stars. Amed Rosario is a versatile veteran backup.
Despite this, Peña was included in the WBC’s short list of the best players on every roster. Time will be of the essence if he wants to play for the Dominican Republic, but the Astros would prefer to take his time and let his talented compatriots shoulder the burden in the coming weeks.
