Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman sends message after Lou Holtz’s death.


Lou Holtz left big shoes to fill in South Bend after leaving the University of Notre Dame’s sideline.

The man currently filling that position, Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman, reacted to the announcement Wednesday that Holtz had died at age 89.

“We were very saddened to hear of Lou Holtz’s passing,” Freeman said, via BGI News and On3’s Jack Soble. “Lou and I shared a very special relationship. He immediately welcomed me into the Notre Dame family and provided great support throughout our time together.

“Our relationship meant a lot to me because I admired the values ​​Lou used to build the foundation of his coaching career: love, trust and commitment. “Lou’s influence at Notre Dame extends far beyond the football field. He and his wife, Beth, are respected across campus for their generosity and commitment to Notre Dame’s mission to be a force for good.

“On behalf of the Notre Dame football program, we send our love to Lou’s family, friends and former players and wish you all comfort and peace during this difficult time.”

Freeman, 40, is the 30th head football coach in Notre Dame history. He was the team’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach before being promoted to head coach in 2021.

Freeman, a former linebacker at Ohio State and the NFL, did not play for Holtz.
