Spain reiterates its opposition to war against Iran despite Trump’s threat to cut trade with the European country.

Spain has denied claims by the White House that Madrid is now cooperating militarily with Washington amid a war with Iran, despite President Donald Trump’s threat to use trade to punish Spanish officials for their stance.
White House spokeswoman Carolyn Leavitt indicated Wednesday that Spain’s stance on refusing to allow the country’s military bases in the war against Iran has changed.

“As far as Spain is concerned, I think they heard the president’s message loud and clear yesterday, and it is my understanding that, in the last several hours, they have agreed to cooperate with the U.S. military,” Leavitt told reporters.
The Spanish government quickly dismissed the claim, with Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez saying he “categorically” denies the White House’s claim.
“Not a single comma has changed, and I don’t know what they are referring to,” Albarez told the Hora25 radio program.
On Tuesday, Trump criticized Spain as “terrible” over its opposition to the war.
“We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain,” the US president said.
But Madrid planned a protest in the face of Washington’s economic threat, reiterating its opposition to war.
“The world, Europe and Spain have faced this critical moment before. In 2003, some irresponsible leaders dragged us into an illegal war in the Middle East that has brought nothing but insecurity and pain,” wrote Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday X.
Spain’s position, he said, was to oppose war, violations of international law and “the illusion that we can solve the world’s problems with bombs”.
Iranian President Masoud Pezheshkian praised Spain’s stance on Wednesday.
“Spain’s responsible behavior in resisting the Zionist-American coalition’s human rights abuses and military aggression against countries including Iran shows that morality and conscious conscience still exist in the West,” he said in a social media post.
“I commend the Spanish authorities for their stance.”
