Tua Tagovailoa could join former AFC East rival in free agency

The upcoming NFL offseason could feature one of the most surprising quarterback moves. According to recent reports, the New York Jets are exploring the possibility of signing Tua Tagovailoa once he becomes a free agent. The quarterback, who spent his entire career with the Miami Dolphins, could potentially hit the open market as Miami weighs key roster changes ahead of the 2026 season. That could make the jet one of the most interesting landing spots.

According to recent reports, the Jets are one of several teams studying Tagovailoa as a possible acquisition this offseason. NFL insider Mike Garafolo reports that New York has begun evaluating the quarterback as a potential free agent option if Miami ultimately moves on from him.

The Dolphins would prefer to trade Tagovailoa, but his massive contract and accompanying financial issues have limited interest around the league. That’s why league insiders believe a release could be the most realistic outcome, which would allow a team like the Jets to acquire him at a much lower cost.

If this scenario unfolds, Tagovailoa could potentially sign a veteran minimum contract and Miami could absorb most of his remaining salary.

Why the Jets might care

The Jets are expected to be active in the quarterback market after a disappointing season and uncertainty at the position. With elite quarterback options limited in the upcoming draft, teams may look to veteran solutions to stabilize the offense.

Tagovailoa will bring experience and proven production to the position. The former first-round pick has displayed a high level of play throughout his career, including a Pro Bowl season and several productive years leading Miami’s offense.

In 2025, Tagovailoa threw for 2,660 yards with 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, compiling a 6-8 record as a starter.

A familiar rival could be the new QB

One interesting aspect of the rumor is Tagovailoa’s history with the Jets. He has historically performed very well against New York and has an undefeated record as a starter in that matchup.

Now the quarterback could potentially switch sides within the AFC East. This is certainly a move that adds another storyline to one of the NFL’s more competitive divisions.
