Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Image Kanon Catchings hit seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 32 points to extend the Crimson Tide’s eight-game winning streak to a victory over No. 16 Alabama 98-88 on Tuesday in Athens, Ga.
The catcher was 12-for-20 from the floor, 7-for-13 from distance, and had six rebounds, two in the final five minutes.
The Bulldogs (21-9, 9-8 Southeastern Conference) also got 16 points from the Blue Canes, leaving them one point short of reaching 1,000 career points. Marcus “Smurf” Millender had 12 points and six assists and Kareem Stagg added 10 points.
Alabama (22-8, 12-5) was led by Lavaron Pilon Jr.’s 26 points, including four 3-pointers. Latrell Wrightsell Jr. added 19 points with five 3-pointers and five rebounds. Aden Holloway had 15 points and Aiden Sherrell had 12.
Georgia avenged a 21-point loss to Alabama in Tuscaloosa last year and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Crimson Tide.
Georgia scored the first six points of the game, but Alabama scored the next six. From that point on, neither team led by more than two points until the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run, including eight points by Catchings, to take a 30-20 lead with 7:50 remaining.
The Bulldogs had an 11-point lead when Alabama went on a 9-3 run to take a 41-36 advantage. The Tide closed the gap to four points, but Catchings hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Georgia a 50-43 halftime lead with 20 first-half points.
The same reversal pattern continued in the second half. The Bulldogs, led by 12, trailed six unanswered points to 63-51 after Alabama cut it to six.
A clock malfunction forced a 20-minute pause in play with 7 minutes, 57 seconds left and Georgia ahead 75-67. After Alabama scored, the shot malfunctioned again and the clock stayed on the scorer’s table for the remainder of the game.
Georgia finally made five straight 3-pointers to close the game with a 90-80 lead on Millender’s trey with 2:58 left.
