The expansion will also create about 1,750 jobs.
According to the report, the fast food giant kicked off its latest expansion last month with the opening of a new restaurant in New Ross, which the company is treating as the first step in a multi-year growth strategy.
The group wants to add five sites a year over five years.
Mike Spencer, McDonald’s vice president of UK and Ireland development, was quoted by the publication as saying: “The outlook for McDonald’s in Ireland is very positive, and we have a clear plan to invest more than €150 million here over the next five years.
“This investment will support the opening of five new restaurants each year – about 25 in total – and create approximately 1,750 new jobs across the country.”
McDonald’s will celebrate 50 years in Ireland next year and plans to open its 100th restaurant in the country in 2027 to coincide with the anniversary.
The chain currently has 96 restaurants nationwide, operated by 18 Irish franchisees. They employ over 7,000 people and contribute over €414 million to the Irish economy each year.
“We plan to celebrate our 50th anniversary in Ireland next year to coincide with the opening of our 100th restaurant in Ireland,” Spencer said.
In addition to opening new stores, McDonald’s is allocating funds to modernize existing sites. This includes a €3m upgrade of the Cork Douglas restaurant overseen by local franchisee Jim Ronan.
In Cork, the company employs over 1,100 staff.
McDonald’s said it spends more than €240 million each year through its Irish supply chain, sourcing from manufacturers and partners across the country.
