Rebilas-Imagn ImageMaurice Odum hit five 3-pointers and had 23 points and six assists to lead Arizona State to a 70-60 win over No. 14 Kansas in Big 12 action Tuesday night in Tempe, Arizona.
Masamba Diop added 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for the Sun Devils (16-14, 7-10 Big 12), who never trailed while improving to 5-0 at home against Kansas. Arizona State won for the fourth time in the last six games and took a lead by as many as 20 points.
Tre White had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Jayhawks (21-9, 11-6), who lost for the fourth time in their last six games.
Darrin Peterson added 15 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, but made just 3 of 18 field goal attempts. Flory Bidunga had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Kansas, which made just 29.2 percent of its shots and was 7 of 27 from behind the arc.
Jayhawks coach Bill Self was ejected with 6:07 left in the first half after vigorously disputing the call.
Kansas assistant coach Jacque Vaughn, a former NBA coach, ran the club after Self was ejected.
Arizona State shot 32.2% from the field, including 8 of 25 3-pointers.
After Odum hit an Arizona State trey, the Jayhawks scored five straight to pull within 57-55 with 4:04 remaining.
Anthony “Pig” Johnson scored five straight points and Diop had two big dunks to take a 66-55 lead with 1:03 left. Noah Meeusen added two free throws with 48.2 seconds left to give the Sun Devils a 13-point lead as they closed out.
The Jayhawks used a 17-1 burst early in the second to move within 43-39. Peterson hit two 3-pointers in a 35-second span with 14:23 left.
Odum scored five straight points three minutes later as the Sun Devils took a 54-42 lead with 11:11 remaining.
Odum had 15 first-half points as Arizona State led 40-20 at halftime.
Peterson missed all seven of his field goal attempts in the first half and had just two points in the first half. The Jayhawks shot just 21.1% (8 of 38).
The Sun Devils led the Jayhawks 23-16 when Bryce Ford went after Peterson and the Kansas freshman attempted to overcome it.
Peterson was called for an offensive foul and Self exploded. He received the first skill immediately and the second just a few seconds later.
Odum hit three of four technical shots to start the half-ending 17-4 run. Odum scored nine straight points for Arizona State late in the first half to help the margin reach 20 points.
