Spring Training Recap: American Clover Giants in WBC Rowing

Fifteen different players had hits as Team USA defeated the San Francisco Giants 15-1 in the first of two World Baseball Classic tune-up games Tuesday in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The American team, loaded with major league talent, had 19 hits. Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge and Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh each had a hit and an RBI, while Alex Bregman and Roman Anthony homered. Pirates ace Paul Skenes recorded four strikeouts in three innings for Team USA.

Patrick Bailey doubled and scored for the Giants and also provided the only RBI on a ground ball. Willy Adames and Casey Schmitt also doubled.

Team USA plays its final warm-up game against Colorado on Wednesday before its WBC opener against Brazil in Houston.

Blue Jays 10, Canada 7

Riley Tirotta hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to lead Toronto to a win over Team Canada in Dunedin, Florida.

Jesus Sanchez allowed three runs on two hits and Nathan Rooks added a two-run hit in the Blue Jays’ five-run second inning.

Jacob Robson hit a solo homer to give Canada four runs in the eighth inning, completing a comeback from an early 7-0 deficit before Tyrotta’s blast put Toronto ahead.

Netherlands 8, Orioles 5

Ceddanne Rafaela hit a three-run home run in the second inning and a two-run double in the third to beat Baltimore in Sarasota, Florida.

Ray Patrick Dether hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning and boasted three hits and three runs. Ozzie Albies also went deep in the Dutch second inning.

Pete Alonso continued his strong spring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning, and Jeremiah Jackson also went deep for the Orioles.

Yankees 11, Panama 1 (8)

JC Escarra hit a two-run home run to right-center field in the fifth inning in Tampa, Florida, sending New York to a rout of Panama.

Ryan McMahon hit a two-run hit in the first inning, Kennedy Corona gave up two hits and two runs, and Escara added a sacrifice fly to set the pace for the Yankees.

Ruben Tejada hit an RBI grounder in the 8th inning against Panama.

Metz 6, Nicaragua 3

Vidal Brujan led New York to victory with a two-run hit in the sixth inning in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The Mets added a solo home run by Chris Suero in the 8th, and rookie Bo Bichette scored the first run with a sacrifice fly in the 1st.

Freddy Zamora and Brandon Leyton each hit solo home runs for Nicaragua. Zamora added his second RBI on a sac fly.

Pirates 7, Colombia 1

Jake Mangum had two hits and two runs to lead Pittsburgh to a victory in Bradenton, Florida.

Konnor Griffin and Jhostynxon Garcia each had 11 hits and doubled RBI for the Pirates.

Colombia earned a shutout win thanks to an RBI double from Jesus Castillo in the 9th inning.

Israel 1, Marlins 0

Garrett Stubbs hit an RBI triple off Cole Carrigg in the fourth inning to lead Israel against Miami in Jupiter, Florida.

Carrigg joined Benjamin Rosengard with a hit and Robert Stock struck out three batters and allowed no runs in three innings for Israel.

The Marlins had just four hits but made two costly errors.

Raise(ss) 5, Twins 2

Chandler Simpson had a fiery RBI single in a five-run first inning for a split-squad Tampa Bay team against Minnesota in Fort Myers, Florida.

Logan Davidson, Jacob Melton and Xavier Isaac each had an RBI single during the Rays’ inning, while the Rays had eight hits.

Royce Lewis hit Brooks Lee on a pair of sacrifice flies for the Twins.

Rays(ss) 3, Phillies 1

Ryan Vilade had two hits and one run as Tampa Bay defeated Philadelphia in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Vilade scored on an RBI single by Taylor Walls in the second inning for the Rays, who had scored in each of the first three innings.

Jose Rodriguez had an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Phillies, who were 3-7-1 in spring training.

Mexico 6, Diamondbacks 3

Rowdy Tellez homered and hit an RBI single to lead Team Mexico to a victory over Arizona in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Alejandro Osuna also homered and Nick Gonzales gave Mexico a two-run double and got 2 1/3 scoreless innings from Philadelphia’s Taijuan Walker on the mound.

Jordan Lawlar had two hits, including an RBI triple, for the Diamondbacks, and after pitching two scoreless innings in Zac Gallen’s start, Juan Morillo allowed four runs in an inning.

Royals 4, Cuba 0

Michael Massey homered to lead Kansas City to an early surge as they defeated Cuba in Surprise, Arizona.

Messi scored the first goal with a home run in the first inning and continued the 3-0 lead until the second inning. The Royals got three no-hit innings from Ryan Bergert, who struck out four.

Leadoff hitter Roel Santos had two hits against Cuba, who had six hits but went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Starting pitcher Denny Larrondo was hit hard, allowing five hits and three runs in two innings.

England 7, Brewers 3

Harry Ford homered as part of a three-hit performance as Great Britain began its WBC warmup with a win over Milwaukee in Phoenix.

BJ Murray also had three hits, including a double, and DL Hall allowed one unearned run in three innings on the mound for UK.

The Brewers scored two of three runs on home runs by David Hamilton and Akil Baddoo. Young Jacob Misiorowski started and struck out 5 in 2 innings, but allowed 2 hits and 1 run.

Italy 9, Cubs 4

Owen Ayers, Kyle Teel and Thomas Saggese homered to spark Italy’s comeback against Chicago in Mesa, Arizona.

The Italian national team gave up nine runs in the final four innings after falling behind 4-0. Playing against his own organization, Ayers had two hits and two RBI as a mid-game substitute.

Cade Horton struck out three and allowed no runs over three innings, but the Cubs committed three errors in the sixth to force a tying four unearned runs.

Athletics 14, Brazil 4 (7)

Jeff McNeil and Austin Wynns set the stage by hitting back-to-back seven-run first inning home runs to hand the Athletics a seven-inning loss to Team Brazil in Mesa, Arizona.

Jacob Wilson added a sac fly, an RBI groundout and a hit, one of nine track and field players with exactly one hit each. Ryan Lasko added a three-run triple in the third inning to extend the lead to 10-1.

Brazil had nearly as many hits as the Athletics (9-8), but went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Osvaldo Carvalho had a team-high two hits, including a double, and Gabriel Gomez had a two-run triple.

Dodgers 5, Guardians 4

Miguel Rojas had two hits and a two-run home run to help Los Angeles overcome an early deficit against Cleveland in Goodyear, Arizona.

Zach Ehrhard hit a 2-run triple in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, and Ryan Ward’s RBI single proved to be the game-winning hit. The Dodgers overcame a sluggish start by Roki Sasaki, who was tagged for four runs in the first inning, and followed with two scoreless innings.

Kyle Manzardo put the Guardians ahead 4-0 after hitting a grand slam in the first inning, his first home run of the spring and his second hit in 18 at-bats.

Padres 4, White Sox 3

Nick Castellanos led off the game with his unofficial first home run with San Diego in a win over Chicago in Phoenix.

Castellanos, who signed with San Diego on February 14 after being released from Philadelphia, added a two-run shot and a double. Padres starting pitcher Nick Pivetta allowed six hits and two runs in three innings.

The White Sox got two hits and a home run from Miguel Vargas, but left eight runners on base. Sean Newcomb started for Chicago and allowed 5 hits and 2 runs in 3 innings.

Angels 7, Mariners 6

Yolmer Sanchez doubled home twice and Donovan Walton added a triple and an RBI to lift Los Angeles past Seattle in Peoria, Arizona.

Jeimer Candelario added a two-run hit, his first home run of the spring, for the Angels, who also got doubles from Chris Taylor and Raudi Rodriguez.

Patrick Wisdom homered in the second inning to add a two-run hit for the Mariners, and Rhylan Thomas also hit his second home run of the spring in the second inning. Bryan Woo struck out four in his second spring start but allowed two hits and two runs over 2 1/3 innings.
