Wisconsin (20-9, 12-6 Big Ten) won 90-73 at Washington on Saturday thanks to a career-high 32 points from reserve defenseman Braden Carrington, who hit a school-record nine 3-pointers.
Maryland (11-18, 4-14 Big Ten) lost 69-65 at home to Rutgers on Sunday.
Wisconsin bounced back against Washington after a disappointing 85-71 loss at Oregon earlier in the week, knocking the Badgers out of the top 25.
βI thought we played with great energy just by the reaction and rebounding,β Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said after the Washington game. βIt was an uneven game and a little unsteady at times, but we were able to stay true to who we wanted to be.β
Wisconsin has a 14-2 home record and is tied for fifth in the Big Ten with No. 15 Purdue, behind Illinois (No. 11). The Badgers closed the regular season Saturday at Purdue, handing Wisconsin 89-73, one of two home losses in early January.
The top four teams receive a direct triple bye to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Wisconsin could be seeded anywhere from 3rd to 7th.
Carrington, who transferred to Wisconsin for his senior season, hit 9 of 15 shots against Washington, including 6 during the team’s 54-point second half. Nick Boyd added 22 points as the Badgers improved to 18-0 with at least 80 points this season.
Boyd averaged 20.3 points, John Blackwell 18.3 points and Nolan Winter added 13.5 points and a team-high 8.7 rebounds.
Maryland fell behind 39-20 at halftime against Rutgers but briefly led before suffering its fourth loss in five games. Andre Mills and Elijah Saunders had double-doubles for the Terrapins.
Maryland coach Buzz Williams later said, “There are always three parts to a good program, to a good team.” “You have to play really hard, prepare the right way and then execute. We didn’t do all three, especially in the first half.”
David Coit had 14 points for Maryland and Mills’ 11.7-point average was a significant improvement from his recent 39-point effort against Northwestern. Solomon Washington had a team-high 9.3 rebounds.
