Former Eagles linebacker and six-year NFL veteran Dick Absher has died.


Dick Absher Jr., who played for four NFL teams over six NFL seasons, died Feb. 25. He was 81 years old.

Absher, a native of Washington, D.C., played linebacker for the University of Maryland from 1964-66. He led the team in receiving in 1964 and 1965 and earned First Team All-ACC honors in 1966.

Absher was selected in the fifth round of the 1967 NFL Draft by the Eagles. He went on to play for the Washington Redskins, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints. Absher retired after the 1972 season with Philadelphia, where he played in 58 games and recorded three interceptions along with five fumble recoveries.

After his football career, Absher served in the U.S. Army Reserves for eight years. He later worked as a home builder in Maryland.

Absher is survived by five children, five grandchildren and five sisters.
