Shielded Labs urges the Zcash community to move quickly on long-term sustainability changes, stating that the network has an imminent window for patient investment and should not wait until that window closes. The field is not just technical. In a statement from Shielded Labs, protocol-level clarity about security and future releases could be an investment signal for ZEC.

Controversy emerged in a Zcash Community Forum discussion around the proposed Network Stability Mechanism, or NSM, where Shielded Labs pushed back on the idea that the work was not worth the short-term.

“We believe that there is currently an opportunity to attract long-term investors. In the conversations we have had over the past year, investors respond positively to the fact that we are thinking about and actively addressing long-term sustainability. The broad consensus of the community and coin owners to implement NSM in the next network update sends a clear signal that we have a reliable way forward.”

Zcash may lose its momentum without quick action

This framework is important because the current debate is not only about whether Zcash should strengthen its future security budget, but how. In a separate management post, Shielded Labs said recent polls showed a split between support for NSM’s general direction and opposition to one of its more sensitive design choices, emissions smoothing.

According to the group, “There were two separate questions: one related to NSM and issuer alignment, and the other focused on burning 60 percent of transaction fees to support network stability.” It added that the emission smoothing question received “broad support from panels but not coin holders”, while the fee component received broad support from both panels and coin holders.

Based on this, Shielded Labs said it sees “clear support” for the elements that remove ZEC from circulation, including ZIP 233 and ZIP 235, and plans to push those pieces into the next network update.

Protected Labs also acknowledged that resistance from coin owners is not unreasonable. “For some coin holders, the current emission schedule is seen as part of the defining identity of Zcash, which in principle is similar to the minimum supply of 21 million. This is a reasonable position,” the post said, adding that the team is open to alternative designs that maintain the halving schedule while improving stability.

However, the main message shared by the new forums was definitely urgent. Protected labs have argued that upcoming network developments could make time more consistent than it seems today.

“Tachyon may increase fees in the near future, allowing for much higher transaction speeds, which makes this time especially important. The integration of NEAR Intents and additional functionality of Maya DEX may also increase the demand for fees. If several of these developments are involved at the same time, the usage of the network may increase significantly. In this scenario, it would be better to introduce NSM later.”

The broader strategic claim is that Zcash can differentiate itself by confronting a question that many proof-of-work networks still treat as a future challenge. Protected Labs clearly ties the issue to the broader debate over Bitcoin’s long-term security budget, stating that a mechanism “clearly defined at the protocol level” could be critical to assessing the network’s stability.

Whether or not this case is enough to win the dubious coin remains unresolved, but the direction of travel is clearer: Shielded Labs wants Zcash to offer stability not as an abstract research topic, but as part of an asset investment thesis.

At press time, ZEC was at $216.59.
