Bills coach Joe Brady adds John Fox as senior assistant

Joe Brady is already making moves to bolster Buffalo’s staff. The Bills announced Friday that they’ve hired John Fox as head assistant coach, giving their first hire some serious head coaching experience.

Fox was around. The 71-year-old coached the Carolina Panthers from 2002 to 2010 before moving to the Denver Broncos (2011-14) before finishing his head coaching career with the Chicago Bears from 2015 to 2017. He went to two Super Bowls as a head coach and spent several years as a defensive coordinator before that.

More recently, he served as a defensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 and the Detroit Lions in 2023.

The hire fits what Brady said he was looking for when he first got the job. He wanted someone with head coaching experience, but he didn’t want someone who acted like he had all the answers.

“Full transparency, I’d like to have (a staff member with head coaching experience). It’s not required. There’s a fine line when you bring in a coach, and I’ve worked with coaches who have been in certain systems and said, ‘This is the only way to do it.’ It would be nice to have people with experience that I can rely on, but they’re not sitting there saying they have all the answers. It’s more important to have someone who can help me, someone who can come up with ideas. … Compatibility is much more important to me.”

Brady’s 36 years old — Currently the youngest head coach in the NFL. And he has never been a manager at any level before.

Fox is just one of the current ones. About 20 coaching staff The bill was announced on Friday. Brady also promoted tight ends coach Rob Boras to running game coordinator and tight ends coach. The move came after offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, who was in charge of the running game, decided to retire.

On the defensive side, Joe Danna, one of the few holdovers from the previous staff, was promoted from safeties coach to assistant coach.
