Mandatory Credit: Peter Creveling-Imagn Image Jamal Murray had 45 points and eight assists to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 128-125 win over the Utah Jazz on Monday in Salt Lake City.
Murray was 8-for-13 from 3-point range, helping Denver record its second straight loss. Nikola Jokic had 22 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the Nuggets, while Julian Strother had 15 points.
Denver shot 54.1% from the field and made 16 of 39 3-point attempts (41%). The Nuggets also outscored the Jazz 14-7 in second-chance points.
Keyonte George led Utah with 36 points and four steals, while Kyle Filiposki had 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Ace Bailey added 18 points and Svi Mykhailiuk added 15 points.
The Jazz have lost their sixth straight despite scoring 27 points off Denver’s 15 turnovers and outscoring the Nuggets 25-15 in fast break points.
Utah trailed by nine with 7 minutes and 32 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but scored nine straight to take a 122-118 lead with 2 minutes and 13 seconds left. George fueled this surge with four straight goals, culminating with a go-ahead 3-pointer. He added a steal and a running dunk to put Utah up by four points.
Jokic’s four free throws on Denver’s two possessions tied the game.
George’s 3-point play with 1:28 left gave Utah a 125-122 lead, but Murray hit a fadeaway shot and then made two free throws with 31.8 seconds left to give Denver the lead again.
George missed two shots in the final seconds and Jokic added two points from the foul line.
The Nuggets shot 20-for-21 on free throws in the fourth quarter, while the Jazz went 3-for-3 from 3.
Denver took an 8-0 lead in the second half and led for most of the third quarter. Strawther and Murray hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Denver up 74-67.
Utah eventually made up for the deficit and took a 91-90 lead with a pair of free throws from Bailey. That lead proved to be short-lived.
Murray countered with a stepback 3-pointer on the next possession to put the Nuggets back in front. His fifth and final outside basket of the third quarter helped fuel a 7-0 run that gave Denver a 100-93 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Murray scored 18 points in the third quarter alone.
George hit a pull-up 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give Utah a 67-66 lead into the locker room.
