We can’t tell you what the meaning of life is, but we can at least tell you what every little thing on an NFL jersey means, especially the helmet.
There are so many branding design elements in current NFL uniforms that it’s hard to keep up.
This piece aims to break down every element of an NFL uniform from head to toe.
Helmets – NFL Decals & Stickers Description
Green sticker on the back of the helmet and what it means

This small green circle on the back of the helmet near the top of the head indicates players who have a wireless communication device on their helmet. The radio only works one way. So coaches talk and players listen, unlike the way they act on social media.
The green sticker player was an offensive-only tool that started in 1994. You only see quarterbacks with stickers on their helmets. Because he calls the plays and makes the adjustments. There’s no sense in wasting it on a player who barely sees the field in any way.
In 2008, the league allowed defenses to assign a radio to one defensive player on the field. As of 2024, the defense may have three players with green dots as the nature of the defense is more fluid. However, only one person is allowed on site at a time.
Cleveland Browns coach and NFL icon Paul Brown is credited with developing this invention during his reign as NFL champion in the 1950s.
Various country flag decals on the back of the helmet and what it means

It was launched as part of the NFL’s efforts to “celebrate the growing number of nationalities and cultures that make up the fabric of the league through an initiative that will see players take the field with international flags on their helmets” in 2022.
Today, fans can view more than 50 countries and regions. Here are the rules (I know some leagues run by lawyers have some):
Players may choose to wear the flag of the United States along with the flag of an international country or territory when:
– Have lived there for more than 2 years;
– You must have a parent or grandparent who was born there.
The league began its globalization efforts in the early 1990s during the NFL Europe period. It was really cool. It was the same with YouTube it, kids. With international games now established as a regular part of the calendar, we will see international recognition continue to grow and attract more spectators.
NFL shield sticker on helmet
The first time the NFL shield appeared on a uniform was during the league’s 50th anniversary celebration in 1969. However, the decal was not attached to the helmet, but only to the uniform as a patch.
Believe it or not, NFL shields on helmets didn’t begin until 1991. From Paul Lukas’ awesome blog Uni Watch:
“The league logo did not appear again on NFL uniforms until the start of the 1991 season, when it was added to the base of the jersey collar, upper left pant leg, and left rear base of the helmet.
This means, among other things, that the last NFL game without a league logo on the uniforms was Super Bowl XXV; play Not having the league logo on the jerseys was Scott Norwood’s infamous missed field goal attempt.
Commemorative decals on NFL helmets

When an important historical figure associated with the league or an individual team dies, the NFL honors that person with a memorial decal.
I am not a fan of former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, and no NFL fan should be. Because while he was using the bathroom, he undermined the American Football League and wrested the title of “commissioner” from the Raiders’ AL Davis during negotiating sessions to merge the AFL and NFL. But his commemorative decal was one of my favorites. The NFL actually allows designers some creative freedom in design.
My favorite “commemorative decal” was from the 1989 Philadelphia Eagles. Eagles QB coach Doug Scovil passed away mid-season, a day before their game against the hated Cowboys (aka Bounty Bowl II). The Eagles placed black electrical tape over their helmet wings for the remainder of the season in honor of their fallen coach.
The most recent example or variation of this was the black background, white font “MLK” sticker worn to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s namesake day.
NFL Man of the Year Sticker in a helmet

The brown sticker of a man in a hat that looks like John Bender from The Breakfast Club is actually the logo for the NFL Man of the Year award. Talk about pressure. man of the year?!
Each team drafts a player at the start of the NFL season. This sticker will be given to each team’s nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and will wear the sticker on their helmet during the season.
The work is pretty cool. On the Internet:
“The NFL Man of the Year Trophy was created by artist Daniel Bennett Schwartz in 1969 and depicts a caped lineman standing alone on the sideline outside of a game. It symbolizes that the award is meant to recognize all players whose humanitarian contributions and efforts are worthy, including those who can play low-key outside the spotlight.”
NFL Uniforms – Patch Description

What is the C on an NFL uniform and what does it mean?
“C” stands for Captain. The “C” patch (not to be confused with the c-pap) on an NFL player’s uniform indicates his role as team captain.
The team captain designation is a team-designated position that designates a specific player as a leader on and off the field. The NFL began allowing teams to add the letter C to their uniforms in 2007.
What does the star under the C on an NFL uniform mean?
The number of gold stars on the patch indicates the length of time the player was appointed captain of the team. If a captain has been appointed for four or more years, the “C” on the patch is gold.
White stars represent empty placeholders for gold stars. For example, if a player has two gold stars and two white stars, this indicates that the player has captained that team for two years.
How many captains does an NFL team have?
No more than 6 players can go to midfield for the coin toss. The maximum number of NFL captains allowed to wear a C on their jerseys during a game is eight. The 2023 Giants had 10 captains, which seems like a boatload. And that means they have one less captain than they lost (11). By comparison, the 2023 Steelers had four.
What does an NFL team captain do?
There isn’t much to it other than “morale” and being a “leader on and off the field.” The captain’s duties take place before the coin toss. The NFL states this in Rule 18 of its rulebook.
Coin Toss Procedure – Each team can send up to 6 team captains to the center of the field. Each team is assigned one captain to be the “speaking captain” for the delegation. The visiting team, or a team designated as a “visitor” by the referee (unless no team has been declared a ‘visitor’), must select “heads or tails” or, in the case of special ceremony coins, the option for heads and tails on that coin.
It seems pretty simple, but if the captain isn’t paying attention or doesn’t know what he’s doing, it can get sticky and ruin the team. Case in point: Packers Jaire Alexander for the 2023 season.
Alexander was suspended for one game for going out to the coin toss on Sunday and almost missing it, even though he wasn’t the captain.
On the Internet:
“Jaire came out as captain when he least expected it, and after the Packers won the toss, he said he wanted to play defense. Luckily, the umpire was cool and made him change his answer. Otherwise, the Panthers would have gotten the ball and started both halves! The suspension is absolutely valid because he willfully ignores what the coach wants.”
What is the brown cape on an NFL uniform and what does it mean?
One of my favorite questions I’ve heard regarding NFL Player of the Year patches on NFL uniforms is “Why does Darth Vader wear an NFL uniform?”
It looks like Lord Vader, but is actually a patch indicating that the player wearing it was named Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.
As long as the player is active, he will wear it on his jersey. The NFL began adding this patch to uniforms in 2017.
