Stock market holiday today for Holi 2026: Is NSE BSE open or closed to celebrate Holi on March 3? Look now

Indian currency markets BSE and NSE will be closed today due to Holi holiday. Although the exchange has declared a holiday today, the festival of colors will be celebrated in major parts of the country on Wednesday, March 4.

The country’s largest non-agricultural commodity exchange, the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) is closed for trading in the first session from 9 am to 5 pm, but will resume trading in the evening session from 5 pm to 11:30 pm.

Meanwhile, the largest agriculture market, the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will remain closed for both trading sessions.

Benchmark indices Nifty and BSE Sensex ended sharply lower on Monday amid selling pressure across the board. Sector wise, financials, auto and consumer stocks were the worst hit. In a volatile session, the broader Nifty closed down 313 points, or 1.24%, at 24,865.70, while the 30-share Sensex fell 1,048 points, or 1.29%, to settle at 80,238.85.

Fear index India VIX rose 25% in the previous session to settle at 17.13.

Decoding the technical charts, Ajit Mishra, Senior Director-Research, Releger Broking said the sharp decline has brought the Nifty close to its swing low around the 24,600 level, and a decisive break below it could extend the correction to the 24,400 mark. “In contrast, the 25,000-25,250 zone is likely to act as an immediate barrier in case of any recovery. Given the high volatility and global uncertainty, we reiterate our advice to maintain a cautious stance, keep position sizing clear and focus on systematic risk management,” he said.
List of 2026 holidays
In the holiday calendar released last year, the exchange had initially announced 15 business holidays, but later January 15 was added as an additional holiday due to the Mumbai BMC elections. After this, domestic markets were closed on January 26 on the occasion of Republic Day.
Equity markets were closed on two other occasions in March. They will be closed on Thursday, March 26 for Shri Ram Naami and Tuesday, March 31 for Shri Mahavir Jayanti.

The next holiday will fall on Friday, April 3, which will be Good Friday. Markets will also be closed on Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1 and Goat Eid on May 28.

The second part of the year includes Muharram 26th, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14th and Gandhi Jayanti on October 2nd. Filed on October 20, followed by Diwali Balipratipada on November 10 and Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24. The last commercial holiday of the year will be on December 25.

The small surprise in the circular is that there is no mention of a holiday for Diwali as it falls on a weekend (Sunday). Trading of the securities will take place on Sunday, November 08, 2026 and trading hours of the securities will be announced later.

The Exchange may change any of the above holidays, for which a separate circular shall be issued in advance.
