castle. PETERSBURG, Fla. — In a thrilling run to the checkered flag, Layne Riggs saved enough fuel to keep a pair of fierce fellow Ford drivers in Ty Majeski and Ben Rhodes behind to win the OnlyBulls Green Flag 150 on Saturday afternoon.

Riggs’s no. The 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford earned his first win of the year, 0.879 seconds ahead of Majeski, and the sixth victory of his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series career in his first race on the streets of downtown St. Petersburg.

Riggs put up an incredible performance from the moment the green flag dropped, starting 28th in the 36-car field. He finished seventh in the opening 20-lap stage and won the second stage 20 laps later. Riggs said the fuel light was blinking with about eight laps to go and he was almost certain there wouldn’t be enough to finish.

“I didn’t know how long it was going to last,” Riggs said.

He celebrated the first road course win of his career, recording a race-best 41 of 80 laps to take the win and last long enough to allow for a victory donut around the crowded course.

“It’s been a lot of fun racing here in St. Pete. Everyone heard the street course and thought they wouldn’t be able to pass, they thought they wouldn’t be able to race side-by-side, but it was one of the most racing tracks we’ve ever been to, at least in the truck series in my time,” Riggs said with a laugh. “It was really fun.

“I call myself a road racer now.” He added that this is only the fifth road course race of his life. “It’s amazing that we were faster today, racing against so many big names, beating some and knowing these guys are road course ringers.”

Clear skies and a scenic 1.8-mile, 14-turn course along the downtown St. Pete waterfront provided a spectacular setting for the first street course event of the series, and the trucks did not disappoint the large and enthusiastic crowd.

At one point late in the race, Riggs, 23, had a more than two-minute lead on the field, but heavy traffic in the final 10 laps allowed Majeski and Rhodes to close. With one lap left, Majeski took his No. 1 to give Riggs a final challenge. It looked like he had his 88 ThorSport Racing Ford in position, but he overtook Turn 13 for the second time on the day.

Majeski recovered enough to maintain second place, but left the track feeling like his opportunity had been lost.

The 2024 series champion emerged from his Ford truck with encouragement from the field.

“I think this was the most fun I’ve had in a race car in a long time,” Majeski said. “It’s really fun. It’s a race track with three good passing zones and discipline is rewarded.

“It’s about finding that balance between being aggressive and making mistakes and staying disciplined,” Majeski said. Majeski’s day included a runner-up finish after two laps to the front and starting in 22nd place.

“I just made a little mistake in (turn) 13, got a little wheel hop and had to chase it and fight my way back. I hope everyone enjoyed the show. We passed a lot of trucks today.”

Rhodes, who led the first 23 laps, was also unable to contest the final lap because he needed to conserve fuel.

“That’s all I had in the tank here for the F150. I literally ran out of fuel for the last two laps,” said Rhodes, a pair of top-five finishers in the season’s opening three races.

“I’m really proud of Ford Racing for bringing us a fast truck. Our truck is a one-piece truck, but a lot of trucks aren’t, but we’re very excited. It’s a brand-new truck and it looks good.”

Former IndyCar stars Dario Franchitti and James Hinchcliffe, and Colin Braun, now a full-time rider in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Series, have added an additional element of excitement to the field. Kaulig Racing’s No. Braun, who started 16th in the 25 RAM Truck, finished 9th to keep up the pace of the respected trio.

Hinchcliffe, a former Indy 500 polesitter and multi-race winner, qualified for the no. Finished 10th in the ’77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet. Franchitti, a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, officially finished 27th after his No. 1 TRICON Garage Toyota pitted late in the race and lost a lap.

Fords swept the top four positions, with Riggs’ teammate Chandler Smith finishing fourth after leading seven laps. Kaden Honeycutt of TRICON Garage rounded out the top five in the Toyota category.

Neice Motorsports teammates Landen Lewis and Andres Perez De Lara finished sixth and seventh, while McAnally-Hilgemann’s Daniel Hemric, Braun and Hinchcliffe rounded out the top 10.

“The overall headliner is a kid from the Bahamas, North Carolina, winning on a road course against some of the best athletes in the world,” Riggs said. “This is a testament to everyone at Front Row Motorsports and a tribute to (sports car driver) Joey Hand, who has done so much with me.”

“It’s a really cool place and I don’t see why I can’t come back next year… I couldn’t believe how packed the grandstands were and I thought it was one of the best road course races the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series has ever seen,” Riggs said about running a doubleheader weekend with the IndyCar Series racing on Sunday. “Thank you to all the fans who came.”

Smith now sits 34 points ahead of former two-time series champion Rhodes in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship standings.
