Mandatory Credit: Ben Queen-Imagn Images Honor Huff had 19 points and six assists to lead West Virginia to a 79-71 comeback win over No. 19 BYU at home in Big 12 Conference action Saturday in Morgantown, W.Va.
Brennen Lorient scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and DJ Thomas scored 13 points off the bench for West Virginia (17-12, 8-8 Big 12), which lost its third straight game.
Jasper Floyd and Chance Moore each scored 11 points to lead the Mountaineers to an NCAA Tournament restart-building win.
Robert Wright III led BYU (20-9, 8-8) with 23 points. AJ Dybantsa had 20 points, 16 of them in the second half, and Aleksej Kostic added 12 points for the Cougars, who have dropped seven of their last 10 games.
With the Cougars trailing 72-69 with 1:57 left, Dybantsa hit a three to make it a one-run game. But West Virginia went back inside for a Lorient layup and a 74-69 lead.
Keba Keita’s steal and layup put the Cougars up 74-71. Huff, Floyd and Harlan Obioha combined for five foul shots to seal the win for West Virginia.
BYU led 22-20 at halftime, but the Mountaineers went on a 20-4 run. Thomas put the Mountaineers ahead 23-22 with a 3-point play that sparked an extended rally to close out the first half for West Virginia.
The Mountaineers bench outscored BYU’s reserve score 24-12.
Huff’s three put West Virginia ahead 28-22. The Mountaineers’ advantage grew to 38-24 when Floyd got past Wright for a layup. The first half ended with a 40-26 lead.
A 7-0 run to start the second half was capped by a 3-pointer by Kostic that cut the BYU deficit to 40-33. But the Mountaineers built a double-digit lead again with a 7-3 rally, starting with a Treysen Eaglestaff 3 and buckets from Lorient and Thomas to take a 47-36 lead.
