Mandatory Credit: Mike Watters-Imagn Image Obi Agbim hit a free throw with one second left Saturday night to give visiting Baylor an 87-86 Big 12 Conference win over UCF in Orlando.
The Bears (15-14, 5-11 Big 12) led the entire second half until a layup by the Knights’ Jamichael Stillwell tied the game at 84 with 1:08 left. After Agbim’s layup put Baylor up, UCF’s Devan Cambridge made two foul shots with 25 seconds left to tie the game again. UCF was called for a foul with 3 seconds left, and each team used the final timeout to strategize.
After a timeout, Baylor attempted a 3-pointer from Agbim and was fouled by Riley Kugel. Agbim missed the first, made the second and missed the third, but teammate Cameron Carr rebounded to allow the Bears to run out the clock.
Carr had 26 points for Baylor, 10 of them from the foul line. Dan Skillings Jr. came off the bench and added 15 points, Isaac Williams had 14 points and Agbim had 12 points and seven assists.
Kugel scored 26 points to pace the Knights (20-8, 9-7), Jordan Burks added 12 and Stillwell had 11. Themus Fulks managed just eight points, six below average, but dished out a game-high 10 assists.
While UCF likely clinched an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with a convincing win at No. 19 BYU on Tuesday night, Baylor came in knowing it would have to win its final three regular-season games and then do damage in the Big 12 Tournament to have a chance.
The Bears outscored the Knights by 56 points in the first half, making 19 of 35 field goal attempts and 8 of 15 from the 3-point line. Carr was instrumental in that effort, scoring 20 points on just nine shot attempts. He made 4 of 6 3-pointers and all six free throws.
UCF shot well throughout the first half but went cold in the second. They also led 10-2 at fast break points and went into the break by 14.
