Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Image Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice and had an assist and Logan Thompson made 24 saves to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over the visiting Vegas Golden Knights on Friday night.
It was Dubois’ 25th career three-point game and his 18th multi-goal game. Aliaksei Protas and Rasmus Sandin each had two assists and Jakob Chychrun also scored for Washington, which extended its home winning streak to five games.
Thompson improved to 3-0-0 in three career starts against the Golden Knights. It was the Capitals’ sixth win in their last seven games.
Braeden Bowman and Tomas Hertl scored and Akira Schmid made 26 saves for Las Vegas, which snapped its three-game winning streak.
Dubois scored two goals in less than three minutes early in the second quarter to give Washington a 2-0 lead. His first goal came 49 seconds in when he took a drop pass from Protas in the right circle and fired a shot past Schmidt’s blocker and into the top left corner. The second goal came at 3:23 when he dug into the slot and received a nice backhand pass from Protas in the back of the net.
Chychrun, playing in his 600th career NHL game, made it 3-0 at the end of the period when he beat Schmid’s 22nd goal of the game with a one-timer from the center of the right circle, first among all defensemen in the league.
Bowman cut the lead to 3-1 early in the third quarter when he tipped a long pass from Kaeden Korczak past Thompson’s blocker.
Hertl made it 3-2 midway through the period with a power play goal, redirecting Pavel Dorofeyev’s pass into the slot over Thompson’s right shoulder for his 600th career point.
Vegas nearly tied the score with four minutes left, but Thompson blocked Brayden McNabb’s shorthanded breakaway attempt and then Mitch Marner’s point-blank attempt seconds later.
