Why BIP-110 for BTC shows a trojan horse

Within the Bitcoin community, a conflict broke out around BIP-110, which became one of the most discussed topics related to the leading cryptocurrency until March 2026.

For those who are not familiar, BIP-110 is a Bitcoin improvement proposal proposed by a developer with the pseudonym Daton Ohm in December 2025 in order to limit the amount of arbitrary data, images and video that can be written on the blockchain through protocols such as Ordinals and Runes.

However, the method is to introduce a 12-month temporary soft patch to filter spam at the consensus level.

Why Bitcoin Veterans Oppose BIP-110

Here comes the main problem. CEO of Blockstream Adam is backa figure mentioned by Satoshi Nakamoto himself in the Bitcoin white paper, along with other industry veterans such as Jameson Lopp and Wang Chun, came out strongly against BIP-110.

First of all, they represent a threat to neutrality. Beck believes that censorship efforts for the types of transactions at the consensus level are more damaging to the network than the spam itself, which he actively fights.

Second, the risk of seizure. The proposal may render some existing UTXOs unusable, effectively freezing users’ funds. Finally, there is the risk of network fragmentation. Enabling a soft fork without broad consensus, with a proposed threshold of 55% instead of the traditional 95%, could result in the blockchain splitting into multiple branches.

Adding fuel to the debate, another bitcoiner known as Hoddlenaut accused Adam Back of being arrogant and ignoring the problems of managing the protocol.

The BIP-110 will probably go down in history as a great filter. If the network rejects it, Bitcoin will reaffirm its resistance to censorship. If it accepts it, BTC will take its first step towards centralized governance, where the rules can change according to the existing agenda.
