Allies are not bound by Trump’s request for help
President Trump on Saturday urged foreign powers to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz. Iran is blocking a major shipping route through which most of the world’s oil supplies normally pass.
“China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK and others affected by this artificial blockade will send ships to the area so that the Strait of Hormuz is no longer threatened by a completely decapitated nation,” he wrote on Satya Social.
So far, no country has heeded Trump’s call. The UK’s Ministry of Defense said it was exploring its options.
Since the beginning of the war, Iran has blocked some oil tankers and attacked cargo ships trying to pass through the strait, leading to a huge rise in global oil prices.
About one-fifth of the world’s oil supply normally passes through this major oil export route.
The waters off Iran’s coast have become a strategic battleground in the war, and the US bombed military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island on Saturday.
Trump said the US could strike the island again, citing it as “just for fun” if Iran continued to interfere with ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
