Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2025-26 NHL season after taking a hit from Anaheim Ducks captain and defenseman Radko Gudas on Thursday night. As a result, Gudas was suspended for five games.
The hit occurred with 4 minutes and 13 seconds left in the second quarter. Gudas received a five-minute major for kneeling and a 10-minute misconduct for the infraction during a 6-4 win in Toronto.
What is Matthews’ injury?
Matthews has a grade 3 medial collateral ligament tear. He also suffered a quad contusion.
reaction to the incident

Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube expressed frustration with the lack of response from the Maple Leafs team following the knee incident. A lack of emotion has been a problem for the Maple Leafs this season.
Elliotte Friedman of Rogers Sportsnet also noticed a lack of response. Friedman hosts a podcast with Sportsnet’s Kyle Bukauskas.
The fact that Gudas was suspended for just five games was criticized by Matthews’ agent Judd Moldaver.
Matthews’ 2025-26 NHL Stats

Matthews had 27 goals and 26 assists for 53 points in 60 games. He is -4 with 18 penalty minutes, 12 power play points, 227 shots on goal, 580 faceoff wins, 81 blocked shots, 42 hits, 30 takeaways and 51 giveaways.
Tough season for the Maple Leafs
Anyway, it’s been a very disappointing season for Toronto. The fact that the Maple Leafs are in last place in the Atlantic Division is extremely disappointing for the Eastern Canada fan base, where a lot of the Maple Leafs are watched.
There is currently little chance of the Maple Leafs making the postseason. Toronto is nine points behind the Boston Bruins in a playoff spot.
As a result, don’t be at all surprised if Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving and coach Craig Berube are fired when the regular season ends next month.
