The Spurs (7-14-8, 29 points) have lost six straight in all competitions and five in the league. And the final four came under the management of manager Igor Tudor, who only signed contracts until the end of the season to ensure Tottenham avoid relegation.
The north Londoners, now 16th, go into the weekend just one place above the table after losing 5-2 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
“Like everything in life, you can choose how you view a situation,” Tudor said. “So, you can stay and cry, you can fight, you can be the victim, or you can say I can change something. That’s the message I want to start with and convey to the players.”
However, Spurs are still severely undermanned in the battle, with more than a dozen players still unavailable due to injuries and suspensions.
Captain Christian Romero and defensive midfielder Palhinha were added to that list after a late clash with Atletico left Spurs with nine men, and neither will return until at least the return leg next Wednesday, Tudor said.
Liverpool (14-9-6, 48 points) also absorbed a midweek UCL first-leg loss 1-0 at Galatasaray on Tuesday. And the Reds went into the weekend in sixth place, three points out of the top four automatic places in next year’s competition.
A surprising 2-1 defeat at last-place Wolves saw their run of three successive league wins halted, leaving the Reds three points behind Aston Villa and Manchester United and behind Chelsea on goal difference. But Liverpool will have a chance to gain the upper hand when they play all three teams in the final four weeks of the season.
Meanwhile, Reds manager Arne Slot said Tottenham’s poor form had not increased the pressure to get a result at Anfield.
“I think if Tottenham are currently top of the league, every fan would expect us to win at home,” Slott said. “We are expected to win. It has nothing to do with the form of the other teams, their position in the league or the quality they have.”
Goalkeeper Alisson Becker missed Tuesday’s game with an unspecified illness but is more likely to return on Sunday than not. Italy striker Federico Chiesa also has a matchday decision after missing Tuesday’s clash through illness.
