Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Image CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ugonna Onyenso scored 17 points and had four blocked shots off the bench, and No. 10 Virginia didn’t allow Miami to fall behind 84-62 in the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament on Friday night.
Thijs De Ridder and Sam Lewis both had 16 points, Malik Thomas had 15 and Chance Mallory added 12 as the Cavaliers shot 52.5 percent from the field.
Second-seeded Virginia (29-4) will face the winner of Clemson-Duke in the tournament final Saturday night. First-year Virginia coach Ryan Odom led his team to an ACC Tournament title 30 years after his father, Dave Odom, won his second straight tournament as coach at Wake Forest.
Tru Washington’s 13 points and Shelton Henderson’s 12 pace third-seeded Miami (25-8) fell to 1-5 in the ACC Tournament semifinals.
It was a baffling offense for the Hurricanes, who have scored 75 or more points in each of their last six games. Miami made 4 of 20 3-point attempts, while Virginia, led by Lewis, made 11 of 26 from long range.
Miami shot 38.6% from the field a day after taking down No. 24 Louisville.
Oyenso made 8 of 9 shots from the floor. De Ridder shot 7 of 14 from the field with a pair of 3-point baskets, and his team-leading six rebounds helped give the Cavaliers a 38-26 edge on the boards.
Virginia’s lead grew to 74-54 with four minutes left in the game. That’s a big difference from the Cavaliers’ 86-83 home win over Miami last month. By Friday night the margin had risen to 26.
Much of the offense took time to develop as the team combined to miss its first 13 3-point attempts.
Oyenso made all five of his shots in the first half and Mallory hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Virginia a 38-23 halftime lead.
Henderson and Washington combined for eight of Miami’s nine first-half field goals.
