The United States will face the Dominican Republic, which beat South Korea 10-0 in seven innings in the quarterfinals, in the semifinals on Tuesday in Miami. The Dominican team won 51-10 in all 5 games in this WBC.
The United States gradually took a 5-0 lead into the sixth inning and seemed to be heading toward a pleasant victory.
Bobby Witt Jr hit a timely hit with a ground ball in the first inning, and the United States added two more runs in the third inning on Alex Bregman’s infield hit and Canadian third baseman Abraham Toro’s throwing error to make it 3-0.
Back-to-back run-scoring singles by Turang and Crow-Armstrong in the bottom two spots of the lineup pushed that advantage to five points, providing insurance that quickly became valuable.
Canada tied the score with no runs in the 6th inning, highlighted by Bo Naylor’s 2-run home run, followed by an infield hit and pass in the very next inning. David Bednar struck out the next three batters to escape unscathed.
This proved to be the last real threat as Garrett Whitlock and Mason Miller shut Canada out over the final two innings to never allow a tie to be reached at the plate again. Miller slammed the door in the ninth inning, striking out the side.
Logan Webb pitched 4 2/3 innings for Team USA, striking out five and allowing four hits and one walk while stranding four runners. In two WBC starts, he pitched 8 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and one run, walking one and striking out 11.
Brad Keller and Gabe Speyer allowed three runs in a combined 1 1/3 innings in immediate relief of Webb.
After Canadian starting pitcher Michael Soroka allowed three runs (two earned) in 2 2/3 innings, Micah Ashman held steady with 2 1/3 scoreless innings and one hit.
The United States had four hits over the final 6 2/3 innings, with Aaron Judge’s double in the first inning being the team’s only extra-base hit.
Canada, which had two hits each from Naylor and leadoff hitter Otto Lopez, was in scoring position with one hit in seven at-bats and left seven runners stranded.
