I’m a big oil puller. I’ve shared before how I started this old habit and why I started oil pulling with coconut oil instead. I decided to give my oral routine a boost with these coconut oil pulling essential oils!
Benefits of Coconut Oil
Not sure about oil pulling? It’s just pouring oil (usually sesame oil or coconut oil) into your mouth, then pouring it into the trash. There is some research, and a lot of evidence that it can reduce memory loss. Coconut oil is also an antibacterial agent and can help keep bacteria in the mouth.
Coconut oil teeth whitening is an old thing, but many people are starting to bring it back. How long you infuse the coconut oil depends on your tolerance, but 5-20 minutes is a good goal. So, how often do you pull coconut oil? I search once a day, or at least several times a week.
What kind of coconut oil you use also plays a role. I recommend using organic, virgin (or unrefined) coconut oil. MCT oil will also work.
Use coconut oil to pull teeth
The idea is that the oil can reach and help remove harmful substances from the mouth, such as bacteria and plaque. Unlike alcohol-based mouthwashes and toothpastes, oils can reach the gum area. And the antibacterial effect of oils like coconut can help destroy bacteria.
Many report that their teeth and gums feel much cleaner when they use oil pulling regularly. Others find that the odor disappears. Personally, I noticed a slight swelling of the gums on my teeth. My dentist even commented on how clean and plaque free my teeth were when I added the oil pulling to my oral health routine.
While oil pulling is not a miracle cure, there is a good chance it promotes healthy teeth and gums. Especially if used with other good oral health practices. If you want to read more, I have written about coconut oil pulling in detail here.
Coconut oil is used for pulling essential oils
These coconut oil pulls were inspired one day when I made homemade chocolate in a small mold. I found that I could make my life easier by using oil pulling.
Adding essential oils like peppermint, clove, and tea tree enhances taste and health benefits. My current favorite is mint and clove. Just make sure that the oils you choose are not safe for oral use and interact with any of your medications or medical conditions.

I keep these chews in the fridge so they keep their shape. Keeping them cool also helps with the process in the beginning. For my kids who have trouble with coconut oil brands, keeping these in the fridge so they can “chew” them first helps a lot.

- Need a pre-made essential oil blend? I love this stand alone mouthwash from Wellnesse.
- The peels I used contained about 2 teaspoons each. If your mold is smaller or larger than mine, you will get a different result.
