61 percent of Canadians disapprove of US military actions in Iran: Poll – National


A new Ipsos poll conducted for Global News reveals 61 percent of Canadians disapprove of US military action against Iran.

Only one in four (23 per cent) Canadians approve (eight per cent strongly approve, 15 per cent somewhat approve), while 16 per cent are unsure either way.

Forty-two percent strongly disapprove, while 19 percent slightly disapprove.

The poll reflected worries about potential Canadian involvement, with 66 percent saying they “fear Canada will be dragged into this war and the lives of our soldiers will be at risk.”

Thirty-two percent think the war in Iran will end in a couple of months, 41 percent disagree and 28 percent are unsure.

54 per cent of Canadians support “using diplomacy with the US, Israel, Iran and other countries to try to de-escalate the situation”, while 51 per cent oppose “providing military support to help the US fight against Iran”.

How do Canadians view Carney’s handling of the Iran war?

Forty-one percent of Canadians believe Carney is doing a “good job” in handling the war, while 22 percent say he has done a “bad job.” Twenty-five percent remained neutral.

Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters on the sidelines of a tour of Australia that “one can never categorically rule out involvement” in the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

The Conservatives called for a “parliamentary debate before any kind of Canadian military deployment” the day after Carney’s comments.

“It’s up to Parliament to say whether or not we’re ever going to deploy our troops into conflict,” Conservative defense critic James Bezon told reporters in Ottawa on March 5.

Under Canadian law, “the decision to deploy (Canadian forces) internationally is an exercise of federal Crown prerogative. No legislation operates to limit the executive’s powers in this area.”


This means that the deployments of the Canadian military are ultimately decisions made by the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of the day.

Likewise, 64 percent of Canadians say U.S. President Donald Trump has done a “bad job,” while only 14 percent approve of his performance.

Additionally, six in 10 (59 percent) Canadians say Trump is “very willing to use military force to advance US interests.”

Eight in 10 Canadians are concerned about the economic impact of war

Forty-seven percent of Canadians are “very concerned” about the Canadian economy and the impact of war with Iran.

The survey found that Canadians are “very concerned” about the price of gas (53 per cent) and the price of crude oil (42 per cent).

Only four percent of Canadians surveyed were found to be “not at all concerned” about the Canadian economy, with seven percent also “not at all concerned” about the price of gas and crude oil.
