Mandatory Credit: Rob Gray-Imagn Image Connor Bedard scored with 1:03 left in overtime for the Chicago Blackhawks, who beat the Utah Mammoths 3-2 in Salt Lake City on Thursday and earned their second win over a Central Division rival this week.
Bedard also added an assist as Chicago swept the four-game season series with the Mammoth. Frank Nazar extended his point streak to five games with a goal and an assist. It was the 22-year-old’s third two-point game in the past six days. Bertuzzi also assisted on Nazar’s goal.
Spencer Knight, who played for the first time in a week, recorded 29 saves and ended his four-game losing streak (0-3-1).
Dylan Guenther and JJ Peterka scored for Mammoth, while Logan Cooley, Mikhail Sergachev and Michael Carcone had assists.
Karel Beymelka stopped 20 shots for Utah, which has lost its third straight game but is 3-1-2 in its last six games.
After helping Knight stop Nick Schmaltz from scoring, Bedard raced in to give the Blackhawks a 3-on-2 rush. When Alex Vlasic’s shot hit the post, Bedard was there to tip the loose puck into the net for his 27th goal of the season.
Guenther put Utah up with 14:13 left in the second period. His 31st goal and third in four games came on a takeaway in the Blackhawks’ offensive zone from Sergachev, who returned Thursday from a nine-day absence due to a lower-body injury.
The defense forced a 2-on-1 breakaway on Cooley. Cooley dished just before Guenther reached the circle and Knight was unable to recover in time.
Chicago got its first power play with 1:34 to play on Clayton Keller’s high stick minor, and the Blackhawks tied it 4-3 44 seconds later. Bertuzzi was alone behind Vejmelka, allowing for an easy tip-in, and Bedard lasered the puck at him from the circle.
Nearly seven minutes later, in Monday’s overtime win over Utah in Chicago, Nazar put the Blackhawks ahead with 10:43 left when he circled the net and found a puck coming toward him from Teuvo Teravainen.
After Carcone forced a Chicago turnover of his own, Peterka forced another five minutes with 6:15 to go.
