Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) is beloved in the Nordic countries for her highly original style, but relatively unknown to the rest of the world. Metropolitan Museum of Art Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helen Schefback It will be the first major exhibition in the United States dedicated to the artist’s work. The exhibition will feature nearly 60 works on canvas, including generous loans from the National Gallery of Finland/Ateneum Museum of Art, other Finnish museums, and private collections in Finland and Sweden, and will be on view from 5 December 2025 to 5 April 2026.

Born in Helsinki, Schevbek witnessed civil war and two world wars, as well as the emergence of Finnish national identity after independence from Russia in 1917. Despite many personal hardships, Schefbeck never wavered in her determination to pursue her passion, and she spent much of her life painting in a remote Nordic country far from the centers of European cultural upheaval and renaissance. She once said firmly: “All I want to do is paint… There is always something to conquer.”

This exhibition was made possible by Elsa A. Brule. This exhibition is organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in partnership with the National Gallery of Finland/Ateneum Museum of Art.
