French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday condemned an attack in northern Iraq that killed a French officer and wounded several soldiers in the Erbil region. Six French soldiers conducting counter-terrorism training in the region were injured in a drone strike, France’s military said on Thursday, hours after an Italian base was also targeted in the region. Several French soldiers were injured in Iraq after a drone attack, with one officer dead

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday condemned an attack in northern Iraq that killed a French officer and wounded several soldiers in the Erbil region.

Six French soldiers conducting counter-terrorism training in the region were injured in a drone strike, France’s military said on Thursday, hours after an Italian base was also targeted in the region.

France has hundreds of troops in the Erbil region as part of a wider international coalition to fight Islamic State militants in the region.

In a post on X, Macron said Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion “died for France” and that several of our soldiers were wounded in the attack.
