Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images As North Carolina State’s ACC Tournament concludes on Thursday, coach Will Wade said he has every intention of bringing his current program back to prominence and has no interest in his former job.
Wade, who was LSU’s head coach for five seasons from 2021-22, was asked if he would be interested in returning to the Tigers. Current LSU head coach Matt McMahon is in the hot seat after back-to-back losing seasons.
“Are there any jobs open there? No?” Asked if he had been contacted by anyone from his previous program, Wade said:
“Listen, let me be clear, I’m very happy at NC State,” said Wade, who is in his first season with the Wolfpack. “I was hired by NC State to do the job. This job didn’t take a year. I’ve already met with our administration about next year and discussed some of the changes we need to make and some of the things we need to do to put this program in a position to be worthwhile for the long term.”
The Wolfpack went 20-12 overall and 10-8 during ACC regular season play. NC State won 98-88 over Pitt in the second round of the ACC Tournament on Wednesday and lost 81-74 to Virginia on Thursday.
McMahon coached LSU in 2022-23, but has never posted a winning record in SEC play and is 3-15 in the conference in each of the last two seasons.
However, Wade repeatedly emphasized that he is happy wherever his feet land.
“Look, we’re going to get a big win at NC State,” Wade said. “That’s what we’re going to do. That’s what we’re going to do moving forward. We have the resources. We have what we need, and it’s up to me and my staff to get the job done.”
The Wolfpack fell behind 9-2 early in ACC play and then lost six of their final seven games of the regular season. Projections still include NC State in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, with the field scheduled to be revealed on Sunday.
“This year hasn’t gone the way we wanted, but we’ll get back together and work hard and we’ll have a ready team next year,” Wade said.
