The San Antonio Spurs have been the hottest team in the league since January 1st.

They look to continue their success when they host the Denver Nuggets on Thursday.

Spurs boast MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama and a supporting cast that seems to showcase a different player in every game. They have won five straight and 16 of their last 17 games.

San Antonio is 24-8 since the calendar turned to 2026 and has gone undefeated through 11 games in February.

The Spurs continued to roll with a 125-116 win over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday, with Wembanyama scoring 39 points and hitting a career-high-tying eight 3-pointers.

“I’m adapting to what the defense is giving me,” Wembanyama said. “I think that’s what defines me. It’s something I never want to lose. The goal one day is to be kind of defenseless.”

The Spurs, led by seven in the fourth quarter, only led 106-105 before Wembanyama hit back-to-back 3-pointers following a powerful dunk.

“He did a good job with his disciplined mechanics and showed he can definitely go out there and make shots, which can put defenses in really difficult situations in terms of how they want to play,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “Because if you take gravity away from him, obviously he can open up the rest of the floor.”

De’Aaron Fox added 25 points and nine assists for the Spurs in Tuesday’s win.

Wembanyama was listed as unavailable for Thursday’s game due to an ankle injury.

The Nuggets play the second game of a back-to-back after a 129-93 win over Houston on Wednesday.

Jamal Murray led Denver with 30 points, Christian Brown had 19, Cameron Johnson had 17 and three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic had 16 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds.

Denver shot 55.2 percent from the floor, forced 15 turnovers and outscored the Rockets by 30 points after halftime.

Wednesday’s win marked the second straight loss for the Nuggets, who have kept their preferred starting lineup intact for the 11th time this season. Denver is now 9-2 as that group enters the game.

“When the group was full, we were 8-2, ranked fifth in defense and fifth in offense.” Denver coach David Adelman said before Wednesday’s game: “We lost two leads in the fourth quarter. It could have easily been 10-0 to start the season.

“But it’s changed since then. It’s just a different lineup every week, every day. If we can play enough games and be lucky enough to make the playoffs, we’ll be in trouble. We’ll be in trouble, too.”

Denver has 16 games left in the regular season to move up the Western Conference standings and get back in sync.

“There will be growing pains,” Adelman said. “Patience is key. We had a full rotation for 10 games to start the season and it went really well. Just get back into the fold and get the flow back. When you get into the playoffs or play-ins (tournament), you want to move up. You want to feel like you’ve achieved your goals. So we need time.”
