Tom Pelissero highlighted the value of veteran safety Kevin Byard III to the New England Patriots. The Patriots agreed to a one-year, $9 million contract during NFL free agency.
Pelissero shared the news on air while discussing the team’s defensive improvements. He described the move as an important addition for the AFC champions. The deal adds a seasoned playmaker to New England’s secondary.

Pelissero pointed out that Byard led the NFL in interceptions during the 2025 season.
“This is a great addition for the AFC champion Patriots. They agreed to sign current NFL interception leader Kevin Byard to a one-year, $9 million contract,” Pelissero said.
“This deal, negotiated by his agent, David Mulugheta of Athletes First, brings a player with plenty of presence around the ball to a New England defense that needs more heading into 2026.”
The veteran defensive back had seven interceptions in the 2025 regular season, and Pelissero said several teams showed interest before the Patriots signed a deal. New England ultimately acquired a player known for consistent defensive production.
“There were several teams at Byard,” Pelissero said. “At this stage of his career, he’s 32 years old. He’s a veteran presence on the back end and someone who’s really highly regarded in Chicago. He’s not coming back to help the Bears get to the playoffs.”
The move also reunites Byard with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. Vrabel previously coached Byard during his time with the Tennessee Titans. That familiarity could help the veteran adjust quickly to the Patriots defense.
Byard also brings leadership experience after serving as team captain with the Chicago Bears. His presence can enhance communication throughout the auxiliary organization.

Byard played nearly every defensive snap during the 2025 season. He recorded 93 tackles, eight passes defended and four tackles for loss.
Kevin Byard III has never missed an NFL game.
The veteran has also shown remarkable durability throughout his career. Byard has not missed a game since entering the league in 2016. He played in 164 consecutive regular season games.
The 32-year-old safety remains one of the most productive defensive backs in the league. Byard recorded at least four interceptions in six of his 10 seasons. His 36 career interceptions rank second among active players behind Harrison Smith.
New England is hoping his experience and playmaking ability can strengthen its defense. And Pelissero believes the Patriots made a smart investment with this deal.
