Barry Dunning Jr.’s 16 points, Roman Ciulepa’s 14 points, Cameron Cohen’s 12 points and Omari Witherspoon’s 11 points 15th-seeded Pitt (13-19) will face seventh-seeded North Carolina State in the second round on Wednesday. Minor’s basket was his second field goal in 10 attempts.
Freshman Ebuka Okorie led 10th-seeded Stanford (20-12) with 14 points. Benny Gealer scored 11 points and AJ Rohosy added 10. It was a disastrous result for the Cardinal, who ended the regular season with four straight wins and was considered a bubble team in the NCAA Tournament.
SMU 86, Syracuse 69
Boopie Miller poured in 25 points, Jaron Pierre Jr. poured in 21 and the 11th-seeded Mustangs held off the 14th-seeded Orange in the second half to win the first round of the ACC Tournament and end a four-game losing streak in Charlotte, North Carolina.
SMU (20-12) faces sixth-seeded Louisville (24) in the second round on Wednesday. Jaden Toombs contributed 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, while Samet Yigitoglu and Corey Washington both had 12 points.
Syracuse (15-17) ended the season with six straight losses. Nate Kingz had 25 points, but did not score in the final eight minutes or so. Tyler Betsey’s 15 points off the bench gave Syracuse its only double-digit scoring tally.
Wake Forest 95, Virginia Tech 89 (OT)
Myles Colvin scored 18 points as the 13th-seeded Demon Deacons beat the 12th-seeded Hokies in overtime in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The first-round game between the Hokies (19-13) and Demon Deacons (17-15) was the 50th overtime in ACC tournament history. Wake will face No. 5 seed Clemson on Wednesday night.
Colvin was one of seven players to score in double figures for Wake. Sebastian Akins scored 14 points and Tre’Von Spillers and Mekhi Mason each had 13 points. Ban Hammond led Virginia Tech with 23 points and Jailen Bedford had 17 points and eight rebounds.
